How Does Plenity Work?

Plenity aids weight loss by creating a sensation of fullness or satiety. It is made from two natural ingredients, cellulose, and citric acid, that form a three-dimensional matrix designed to occupy volume in the stomach and small intestine, creating a sensation of fullness.

Who Is the Manufacturer Of Plenity?

Plenity is manufactured by Gelesis, a privately held biotechnology company located in Boston, Massachusetts. It was founded in 2006. The company develops medical devices and treatments for obesity.

What Are the Ingredients In Plenity?

Plenity is composed mainly of two primary active ingredients, which are as follows:

Citric Acid – Citric acid is a weak organic acid that occurs naturally in citrus fruits. It is listed as an ingredient in a significant percentage of prepared foods, beverages, and medications. Citric acid is an industrial staple in medicines and dietary supplements. It stabilizes and preserves active ingredients and masks the taste of chewable and syrup-based medications. According to one research, citric acid can crosslink hydroxyl groups in cellulose, which is the second active ingredient in Plenity.
Cellulose – Cellulose is an insoluble substance, which is the main constituent of plant cell walls and vegetable fibers such as cotton. It is a polysaccharide consisting of chains of glucose monomers.

It is indigestible by humans, one study[1] revealed that highly cross-linked cellulose in capsule form expands in the stomach to a size fold of its original volume. It is purported to induce a prolonged feeling of satiation and a delay in gastric emptying, thus promoting weight loss.

Plenity also contains gelatin, titanium dioxide, and sodium stearyl fumarate.

The Science Behind Plenity

Plenity consists of citric acid and a super-absorbent hydrolyzed gel made of carboxymethyl cellulose, an indigestible fiber.

When swallowed, the pill releases the gel, which absorbs 100 times its weight in water, causing the stomach—which has, on average, a 1-liter capacity to lose about 25% of its available volume. This creates a sensation of fullness in the stomach, which forces the user to eat less.

What Are the Benefits Of Plenity?

  • When taken before a meal, this product may create a feeling of fullness or satiety, thus preventing overeating.
  • Plenity may aid in weight loss.
  • It is FDA-cleared.

What Are the Drawbacks Of Plenity?

  • It is not available through traditional pharmacies.
  • The product contains cellulose, citric acid, sodium stearyl fumarate, gelatin, or titanium dioxide, which may cause adverse reactions.
  • It is more expensive than other weight loss brands.
  • There are no free samples for Plenity.
